What is Culture?

We have been studying culture in the past couple weeks. Dancing is part of many cultures including Wisconsin Indian Nations. Yesterday, we watched a video of dancing from a recent powwow. Write a list of everything you remember from the video. Your list should contain at least five different things you remember. If you need help, you may watch the video again by making arrangements with me.

History

In the last couple weeks, we learned about Wisconsin history. You choose a Wisconsin Indian Nation to study. You researched where they live, their primary means of nutrition, & entertainment, and what their family life was like. Write two paragraphs telling me how your family is similar and how your family is different based on the information you found through research.

Literature Circle

As a group, you selected one book to read in a literature circle. This activity helped you learn about history or culture from a different perspective. Whether you read fiction or nonfiction, reading a story helps you feel more connected to the topics we learn in class. Write two paragraphs telling me which book your group read, your role in the literature circle, and your favorite part(s) of the book.

Language and Names

We learned several interesting facts about the Wisconsin Indian Nation traditions of naming children. For example, we learned that the Winnebago people use names to identify birth order. We also learned that Potawatomi people use a color-coding system. Select one example and write one paragraph explaining how these systems may or may not be useful.

Wisconsin Geography

While studying the history and culture of Wisconsin Indian Nations, we learned about areas in the state where different nations first made their homes. We also learned about the changes in their locations over the years. Write one paragraph telling me something specific you learned in the past few weeks about Wisconsin geography.
